Am I Headed in the Right Direction? (August 9th, 2020)
This past Sunday, our pastor, spoke on Jonah. Jonah was a prophet of northern Israel who was to go to the city of Nineveh and warn the people of impending doom. God’s wrath was ready to wipe them off the face of the earth. However, we see Jonah’s disobedience led to his adventures in the belly of a great fish. After prayer and repentance, three days later, the fish “vomited Jonah upon the shore”, (Jonah 2:10). He then did as God asked, resulting in not only saving himself, but also the lives of those in Nineveh.
I then began to think of other servants commissioned by God and their reactions to His requests. A first century Galilean, Jewish woman came to mind, Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Mary, too, had some unsettling feelings. Luke 1:29, “But when she saw him (angel), she was troubled at his saying…” Luke 1:30, “Then the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary… She also wondered how this would happen, since she was a virgin, (Luke 1:34). The angel explained how the Holy Spirit would come over her and she would be overshadowed by the Highest and would give birth to God’s Son (Luke 1:35).
Once Mary’s questions were answered, she did not run, hide, or disobey. Her reaction is recorded in Luke 1:38, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”
Oh that I, too, would be so open and obedient to the Lord’s directions.
Jewelry has always been one of my favorite things to buy. I remember with my first paycheck from Dairy Haven, buying new earrings.
I was headed to the store last week in hopes of finding a locket . I needed one that would hold a small picture of my three grandkids.
There were lockets of all sizes and shapes and I had a difficult time deciding on the “perfect” one.
I was reminded of a meme that said something like, “If Jesus had a refrigerator, your picture would be on a magnet right in the front.” Just as I wanted to display the picture of dearly loved grands, Jesus has us at the front and center of His heart. He loves us so much, in fact, that He left His Father in heaven, gave up all the splendor and glory beyond our imaginations, and came to earth as an infant. He died a gruesome death on a cross. Yet, He didn’t stay there. He arose and has gone to prepare a place for us that we may join Him in heaven one day.
Do you have a locket with a picture of a loved one tucked neatly inside? Is Jesus on the throne of your heart? Are His teachings often coming to mind when going through a rough day?
Proverbs 6:20,21 “My son, keep your father’s command, and don’t reject your mother’s teaching. Always bind them to your heart; tie them around your neck.”
If you had a locket to remind you of Jesus, what would be the inscription?
